Recently Beautiful Brown Girls was given the opportunity to attend a private fundraising event hosted by actress Nikki Hoard. The event raised money for the PASH Foundation. The PASH foundation was created by actress Nikki Hoard in honor of her mother who passed away from Early Onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 60, she was diagnosed with the disease at age 53.

The event was held in the historic Hollywood Hills Ivar castle and was catered by Chef Coe. Live entertainment flowed as well as the wine. Guest were treated with an impromptu performance by actor John Marshall Jones from the hit show Smart Guy. Marshall wowed attendees with 2 performances and songs from his one man show, that left the audience begging for more.

The evening ended with a live auction over looking the Hollywood night. The PASH foundation is a labor of love for Nikki Hoard. After losing her mother at such a young age she decided to not grieve her memory but to honor her memory. With the month of November being National Alzheimer’s Awareness month, Nikki along with the PASH Foundation fundraiser also raised additional funds to help sponsor the walk for Alzheimer’s in memory of her mother. Nikki Hoard is a beautiful brown girl, philanthropist, and one to watch.

February 26th – Trayvon Martin National Holiday
justice-for-trayvon-martin

justice-for-trayvon-martin

An injustice has been done. Admitted child killer, George Zimmerman now walks free after a jury of 6 white women found him NOT GUILTY of murder or manslaughter and inevitably found Trayvon Martin GUILTY of aggravated assault. It saddens me to know that a grown 28 year old man decided that a 17 year old African-American child had no business walking in his residential neighborhood. It was in fact so far-fetched that this young boy be walking with a hood on his head (in the rain) that the grown 28 year old man decided he must be up to no good or on drugs. What would today look like had George Zimmerman decided to ask Trayvon Martin if he needed a ride to get him out of the rain that night instead of STALKING him then eventually murdering him?

It’s fair to say that the prosecution in this case didn’t do their best job presenting a case for Murder 2. In fact there were several opportunities for them to object throughout this whole trial that they ultimately missed. Even though I’m highly disappointed with the prosecution I’m even more disappointed by the arrogance, superciliousness, and haughtiness of the defense. The nerve of them to turn Trayvon Martin, an innocent boy who just wanted to get home and out of the rain, into a raging thug who used the “sidewalk as a weapon”. How dare they insinuate George Zimmerman as to being the VICTIM? George Zimmerman was not now nor regardless of what a verdict says will he ever be the VICTIM in this situation. Shame on Mark O’Mara and Don West for standing in the same room as a heartbroken Sabryna Fulton and Tracey Martin and even suggest that there dead, unarmed, innocent son was the aggressor. No one knew George Zimmerman had a gun but George Zimmerman. Just like Zimmerman didn’t know Trayvon was just trying to get home that night. What ever happened to Trayvon’s right to stand his ground? What ever happened to Trayvon’s right to defend himself? Facts are facts. George Zimmerman wrongfully profiled a child, and then stalked that child while carrying a gun. He then murdered that child, yet he walks free today.

Well good luck George Zimmerman! Good luck walking down the streets daily without people trying to take your life the same way you took Trayvon’s. Good luck hiding, trying to get a job, or sleeping with the same gun you used to murder Trayvon under your pillow every night. That is what your life will become now…if you can even call it a life anymore. Having to look over your shoulder, having to fear for your families’ well-being; that’s definitely no way to live. I bet you didn’t think when you murdered an African-American male that you would inherit all his problems. YOU, George Zimmerman ARE NOT the VICTIM! You are a MURDERER. And eventually you will cross paths with someone just a vicious as yourself. I truly pray you don’t become the victim next.

With that being said it is time we turn Trayvon Martin back into the VICTIM he is. It’s time we give him back his role that the defense so callously tried to strip him of. Trayvon Martin is a hero and martyr for foolish self-defense laws. I propose that we turn February 26th, the day Trayvon was murdered into a national holiday. George Zimmerman may be free but if there is a day every single year reminding him of his careless actions then he will never escape Trayvon Martin. If there is a day where people are walking around wearing the now iconic hoodie, then he will never forget. He will forever and always be haunted by his lies, by his prejudice, and by his racism. I declare that February 26th is Trayvon Martin Day and if you agree please click on the link to sign the petition so that we can go straight to the White House with our request.

Here is another link from the Color of Change asking the Justice Department to file federal charges against George Zimmerman for violating Trayvon Martin’s civil rights. Please sign both petitions then share them with your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media. The fight is not over. We must go on for Trayvon’s sake.

Happy Juneteenth!

juneteenth

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Today we celebrate those that came before us who pushed and fought for our freedom. Today we thank you!

She has always been one of my favorite actresses. I always saw myself in many of the roles she played, from Boyz in the Hood to The Best Man, and Love Jones.

Music and the arts – “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” ~~ Plato. I love this quote. It’s exactly how I feel about music.
